Farewell

Great is the art of beginning, but greater is the art of ending
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

I announce that I cease all development and activity in the programming universe indefinitely. My career has reached the turning point I was not expecting for at least another year, leaving me highly off guard and without laid-out plans for this hobby's continuity. I have begun a 5-year residency program in Neurosurgery which is clearly not compatible, time-wise, with programming.

I gave in all my passion for developing, and you gave me back your loyalty and trust, even when I did not deserve that much. Now it is the time for payback. I release all my present and past work as Open Source software, in the hope some talented developer will continue maintaining and expanding my vision of a modern, sleek forum software. The intrinsic flexibility of MyBB is the true hidden gem of an otherwise outdated codebase; I do hope the project can continue and be updated complying to the latest coding standards.

I hereby thank Euan, kawaii, andrewjs18, Ben, Matt, Omar G., effone, Eric J., Devilshakerz, Wildcard, JordanMussi and all the other team members I have had the opportunity to work with when I was a MyBB team member. I thank Tomm M, my mentor, who inspired me to pick up coding with his piece-of-art plugins. And finally, I thank all of you MyBBoost subscribers who have helped me getting through my toughest university years economically.

Yours sincerely, Filippo

Hi @asdf,
thank you for your suggestion and your appreciation for the site. Developing a plugin or a theme is easy compared to developing and maintaining an entire software; also, I am a single person, there's not a team behind MyBBoost but just myself.

MyBB is the best free and open source forum software out there which offers this level of customizability. That's why I am focusing on it despite I am well aware of many other softwares which are slightly ahead in terms of modernity, Flarum over all, but either they are still in beta stages (like Flarum) or they are not easily editable like MyBB is.

MyBBoost wants to be not just a plugin center but also a demonstration of MyBB's potential.

I am confident MyBB developers will make a great leap forward with the next major version (2.0) which will be much more enjoyable and modern than the current version.

Besides, would you mind posting an introduction here? Thank you :)

Wow a big response from a little post. Thanks.

Hi, @Shade
Yeah, I agree MyBB is one of the best free open source forum software (It MAY beat one or two paid softwares). But don't you think creating/making your own software you can add more and better features. Like for example, look at Flarum... damn it progressed alot. It's nearly fully "functional". Yeah and you said "they are not easily editable like MyBB is.". I agree but Flarum is only in beta mode and if you actually visit community.flarum.org (sorry if im not allowed to link other softwares), users are making ALOT of plugins. By "users" I mean the community... not the devs or owners etc.

and i dont know what else im meant to say
i mean like i can't force you but i know for a fact if you created your own software it would get in the top 3 ;)
but once again you're only a single person and you haven't got a team. I understand.

oh and p.s im not that kind of person who writes out big posts and shit but i guess i had to make one since you responded with an essay from my 10 letter suggestion.
and p.s sorry if shit dont make sense. im one of them people who say random shit.

No problem mate. I understand you. Flarum is undoubtedly a great project (and its founder is just like me – a med student, so I know how hard it is to find some spare time to create something like that), and I developed some of MyBBoost's features inspiring from there (such as Hovercards for user profiles). Nonetheless, I have such a small amount of free time that I cannot finish my own little (compared to an entire software) projects, switching to a de novo discussion board would be insane. By the way, Flarum's extensions are far from being as complex as MyBB ones, they just look as basic as they could be. Not even a dime of what you can do with MyBB.

Anyway, I would like to present you my latest projects since you're here reading: QuickReferences 1.2, MyDropzone preview and ThunderBoard beta 6 top the list, but I've been focusing also on MyChat preview lately. I would love to know your opinions there :)

Flarum has a great future.... but no activity from devs site for last 2 months. I hope they will continue in their work, it looks nice. Anyway MyBB is the best! ;)

Devs may not be active but some users are actually creating their own plugins (like shade) and giving good support... Flarum has one of the best community (not in size).

@Shade Yeah. Your plguins are awesome mate, I'll leave good feed back.

Flarum looks awesome if you just want a modern, straightforward bulletin board software. But you can build pretty much any kind of community you can imagine with MyBB. It's a shame so few are actually doing so!
