Farewell

Great is the art of beginning, but greater is the art of ending
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

I announce that I cease all development and activity in the programming universe indefinitely. My career has reached the turning point I was not expecting for at least another year, leaving me highly off guard and without laid-out plans for this hobby's continuity. I have begun a 5-year residency program in Neurosurgery which is clearly not compatible, time-wise, with programming.

I gave in all my passion for developing, and you gave me back your loyalty and trust, even when I did not deserve that much. Now it is the time for payback. I release all my present and past work as Open Source software, in the hope some talented developer will continue maintaining and expanding my vision of a modern, sleek forum software. The intrinsic flexibility of MyBB is the true hidden gem of an otherwise outdated codebase; I do hope the project can continue and be updated complying to the latest coding standards.

I hereby thank Euan, kawaii, andrewjs18, Ben, Matt, Omar G., effone, Eric J., Devilshakerz, Wildcard, JordanMussi and all the other team members I have had the opportunity to work with when I was a MyBB team member. I thank Tomm M, my mentor, who inspired me to pick up coding with his piece-of-art plugins. And finally, I thank all of you MyBBoost subscribers who have helped me getting through my toughest university years economically.

Yours sincerely, Filippo

Hovercards for user profiles

Today I am glad to introduce a new feature for our users: profile hovercards.

Hovering on a user's username for more than half a second will trigger the popup. A lot of effort has been put into adapting the background colors to the avatar, so each hovercard is marked with a personal color based on the avatar's average. I am still not sure if I will release this plugin to the public, but it will eventually be a premium one. I hope you like this new feature :)

If you have anything to complain or suggest, as always, stick to the appropriate forum.

MAybe some ideas:
- show more info about user - last online, etc
- add links to send a pm, add to buddy list...

Really good job!

Last online is already available. Send PM and add to buddy list are not going to be there since the profile already lacks on content (still, but not in the future), adding them to hovercards would mean make profiles useless. Also, biography is available, but you got to set it in your User Control Panel in order to see it in hovercards.

Thank you for your suggestions though.

OK, what about other things?
- total number of threads/posts/rep
- usergroup - (admin/mod/user etc)
- last online (relative format) instead of offline status (now it shows "null").

If not the first one you should consider the last two :) it would be nice to have a quick overview about the user

"null" is the biography (I may add a check for its value though). Last online is already available before the "joined" dateline. The usergroup will be added and some other pieces of informations once the "official" profile gets some more informations.

Nice implementation but doesn't display a lot of useful info. I agree with the suggestions to add more options like Send PM.

QuoteSend PM and add to buddy list are not going to be there since the profile already lacks on content (still, but not in the future), adding them to hovercards would mean make profiles useless.

That's because the user profile, on most forums, is actually useless already. If you can save me from having to go to the profile, that seems like a win!

I have something in mind for profiles and users in general for MyBBoost. Still a proof of concept, but I would like to add the ability to create personal forums to store your MyBB projects and support them in a centralized environment. Forums will have a sort of GitHub integration – like issues, releases, etc. – in order to keep track of your projects in a single, pleasant web page. Something like that would not fit into a single hovercard :) But I do agree there is space for improvements and more informations should be displayed.

Wow awesome feature man. Some plugins of yours should be premium man. Because alot of PAID forums don't even have most of these features. Awesome.
